Archaic
It waited eons. It's done waiting.

When a group of college friends takes a trip to Central California for a research project, they are hoping for a few days of sun and relaxation. But the small town of Pueblo Escondido, nestled in the quiet hills of wine country, is not what it appears. Deep beneath a local quarry, something ancient has woken up.

John Parenteau

Author of the month

In celebration of our newest book, we asked author John Parenteau about how he modified his screenplay sensibility for “ARCHAIC”:

Q: Your books all seem to read like a cinematic experience. Is this something you try to embrace?

A: Absolutely. I can’t turn it off, honestly. I’ve spent my whole career thinking in shots and sequences, so when I sit down to write a novel, I’m seeing it play out like a movie in my head. I write what I see. The pacing, the reveals, the way a scene builds… that all comes from decades of filmmaking. I think readers can feel when a story moves like a film. It pulls you through. That’s what I want. I want you turning pages the way you’d lean forward in a dark theater.

Q: For Archaic, how difficult was it to translate the visual elements of a creature feature movie into words?

A: It was a challenge I loved. In a film, you can reveal a creature in a single terrifying shot. On the page, you have to build that moment differently. You’re controlling what the reader sees and when they see it. There are sequences in Archaic where something is moving through darkness, and you only get pieces of it. I had to think about what’s scarier… showing everything or letting the reader’s imagination do the work. Turns out, the page gives you tools a camera doesn’t. You can get inside someone’s fear in a way a lens never can.

Just when you think you have it figured out... nope, another twist!

Abby has spent her life running from a childhood tragedy—one she’s convinced she caused: the death of her twin sister. As a child, Abby blamed an imaginary friend named Tina. But no one believed her. And over time, even she has begun to doubt herself.

Now, years later, she’s a mother trying to leave the past behind. But when her young daughter begins whispering to an invisible friend—one with a familiar name—her carefully rebuilt life starts to unravel. Desperate for answers, Abby uncovers eerie childhood drawings in the basement—along with a name scrawled in childish handwriting: Tina.

Tina was never real. That’s what they told her. But they were wrong.

For generations, Abby’s family has been cursed—one ‘good’ twin, one ‘bad’ twin—a legacy steeped in jealousy, betrayal, and tragedy. Determined to break the cycle and prove her innocence, she turns to the last person she ever wanted to trust—her ex-husband. But the deeper she digs, the more she realizes: Some imaginary friends were never imaginary at all. And the truth is more dangerous than the lies Abby has told herself.
