Steel Beach

A science fiction epic from “the best writer in America” (Tom Clancy)—Hugo and Nebula award-winning author John Varley.

Description

Fleeing Earth after an alien invasion, the human race stands on the threshold of evolution. Their new home is Luna, a moon colony blessed with creature comforts, prolonged lifespans, digital memories, and instant sex changes.

But the people of Luna are bored, restless, suicidal—and so is the computer that monitors their existence…

From Us:

There’s something about the low grade stress everybody in this book lives under, not only knowing mankind had been kicked off of Earth, but the added knowledge that an all-powerful alien race was juuust down there, beneath them, and may at anytime decide to finish the job. The book has little to do with this invasion, but the idea sets the tone for this unusual story. From Heinleiners to Slash Fighting, when you realize you can’t die, life becomes very different, especially when sometimes your only real friend is a computer that speaks inside your head.
